When I take pictures at 4k+ resolutions it’s because when they are displayed on 1080p or 1440p screens they look a lot cleaner and less jaggy and have more pixel information to show more detail. Larger images will be downscaled and downscaling is the same as downsampling and it’s something that makes pictures look better, not worse. If you’re uploading pictures that are smaller than tumblr’s default dashboard width they will be upscaled to fit and will look awful. In terms of maximum height, the only rule I’ve come across is that when placing 2 or 3 pictures next to each other they should be of similar height or the taller ones will be cropped and not display properly.
I only resize my pictures because I take them at huge resolutions (upwards of 4k), and I resize them down to ~1440p simply for file size and uploading bandwidth purposes (so my final pictures I upload to tumblr are around 1-7mb in size, as opposed to anywhere from 15-60+mb).
